In Pokemon Emerald, how do you get your starter pokemon?

In the woods Prof. Birch is being chased by a Zigzagoon, not a Poochyena like in R/S, anyways he will tell you to go to the bag and choose a pokemon to help him. There you get to pick a pokeball containing either Treeko, Mudkip, or Torchic.

You then must battle the Zigzagoon and then you go back to the lab and Birch tells you that the pokemon is yours to keep.
