Romans, 3-4 turns, tech tree - cheat on - click (first research option) - cheat off - wait for 3-4 turns - game crash. Am I doing something wrong?
I've also tried to turn the cheat on before entering the techtree.

try this..
use the trainer to highlight and modify the research options you want to affect..
save your game.
close the game. shut off the trainer.
now re-run the game and do not use the trainer and go 3-4 turns and see if those research items unlock without crashes now that they have already been manipulated.
if so, then it's possible that the devs have a game .exe scanner working in some cases.. I have not detected it. if that is the case, then direct your anger to the developers who once again put a anti-cheat scanner into their product. it's not our place to be cracking games here and ripping out the protections..
I eagerly await your test..

Ok - I did what you said and it still crashes. I researched the options that I wanted - saved, quit the trainer and restarted. The problem seems to be when I want to continue researching without the trainer. It seems like the trainer option is still on..
Well, the game thinks it's still on.

oh.. so the game coding itself doesn't like that you are unlocking research items way in advance.. even when the trainer isn't running.. I see..

@Caliber Maybe you could try to put in a toggle everything off to help people with this problem like in Shogun 2 and the other Total War games?
if I thought this would help I would do it. there seems to be a lot of 'unchecked' bugs in the game.. i.e., the developers didn't expect items to be used like they are, or people to be leveling up in advance, research items unlocking early, etc.
the jury is still out if there is anti-cheat .exe scanner..
best,
