    South Dakota is ranked 15th.

As I told Darkish, us South Dakotan folk know how to have a good ole time. We ride the family tractor, we make mountains look like presidents, and we absolutely LOVE to churn our own butter. Not to mention make a palace out of corn. And sometimes, if we're lucky, we'll meet a fine lady that we may end up marryin... at a family reunion.

Yep South Dakota is the heart of the country.

I'm packing my bags and moving to South Dakota

Why are the unhappiest states also the ones with the highest population? Are people stupid enough that they enjoy being miserable?

Hell is other people. -- Jean-Paul Sarte.

A witty saying proves nothing. - Voltaire

He isn't trying to prove anything. There's a big difference between proving a point and stating a societal tendency.

If you ask most people, they will say they prefer being in a small group of people, instead of in a huge crowd. Anyone would rather be with a few friends than in a faceless mass. "Hell is other people" is stating the somewhat common nature of humans to prefer solitude to crowds. Some people even take it a bit further and prefer isolationism to groups. Most people do not like other people.

However, even though these people may not like those around them, they deal with it for a few reasons. They may have work there, or family, or it could be that moving is too hard on them. Or they won't move because the bigger cities are familiar. People love rationalizing the familiar.

In short, people would rather stay alone/small groups than in crowds. People even have fears of crowds. For most of these cases, and for humanity in general, Hell is other people.

    It's also not witty.

I'm thoroughly shocked to see that Michigan scored higher than 50. I have to say that our state's current... state... sucks. I know I'm incredibly unhappy with the way things are going here. As for personal happiness, I'm a pretty happy guy. I don't know which the results measured but, somehow, I doubt it was personal happiness.

I'll second this. Michigan is in such bad shape right now..Its sooo depressing. Our unemployment rate is through the roof. Since our economy relied so heavily on the "Big Three," now that the auto industry is going under, so is our livelihood. Not to mention we have some of the craziest weather which actually doesnt help anyone's mood lol.
