Start with hunters knife i think, have look in the smiths shop (weapon/ armors shop)

well when i first started off i used the iron sword and up graded from there because all it requires is ore and thats far more easier to get as a begginer than trying to make weapons from wyverns
this way wyvern bashing will be alot easier and you can get better weapons after that
Just mine on the farm after every mission and go on gathering missions with pickaxes to mine ore that way you get them pretty fast

but wiv the Garuga it just bounces off. I use the Gr8 serpent blade
