Item codes don't appear to do anything in relation to rarity, only item type. If you're trying to turn a common quality resource into a superior rail gun, you're going not going to have a very good time.

You can use quality resources to deconstruct better quality gear. Dark Matter is a green colored resource. If you change it into an equip item, it will change into green quality equipment, though it will still read as plasma, so I wouldn't equip it. Just use it to deconstruct. Since it's a resource, you can change the quantity, though trying to deconstruct it will remove the item regardless of numbers. You can sell them as a whole and buy them one at a time from the shop to have an unlimited amount of green equipment to deconstruct. I'm searching for higher quality resources to deconstruct higher level equipment.
