Does the editor require iceborne?

No it doesn't. I don't have it and it works fine.

What does that error indicate then? Wrong game version?

Unfortunately, I don't know.

If you are sure that you have the latest game version as well, you could try simply redownloading the trainer again to see if it was corrupted by any chance.

I did some more testing, it worked once out of around 5 or 6 attempts. Every time the editor gives the error the game will also crash when I hit esc to menu then attempt to open the item pouch but oddly enough opening the item box by the quest board is fine.

Would it be possible in the next version of the editor to have the file name changed to "65261-XXXX-Monster Hunter World Editor" instead of "65261-XXXX-Monster Hunter World Trainer" so it doesn't try to overwrite the actual trainer every time it gets upgraded?

Well apparently the editor works fine, I was loading it improperly. I normally load in game after choosing my save and in astera then hit F1 and would get the AOB (array of bytes) error. I now hit F1 in the main menu before I choose my save file, then launch the save and everything works fine now. I wish this was documented. If it is I didn't see it.

I think in all games it says to inject (F1) the trainer at the main menu.
