Well, seeing as he retired to his bee farm in 1904...briefly left retirement in 1914...it's safe to say he's been deceased for probably a good 80 years.

THE TRUTH!
Sherlock Holmes isn't dead because he was never born. He's a fictional character.
But even so, people send letters to his supposed adress even though, as Dhampy said, if he was real he'd be dead for easily over 50 years. There is actually a bank at his adress, and there's a guy in the bank who has to sit there all day, sorting through fan letters from people who have don't know he isn't real and would be dead anyway. That guy has to reply to all the letters, telling them that he isn't real and crushing their dreams and hopes of meeting him...
I was planning on dropping this bombshell later, but I'm too impatient, how many people thought he was real?
