I have been told by a Japanese woman that "midwest" American is no accent at all. But then I have been told by an Austrian man that Californian is no accent at all.

Yes, I'd like to think that it's somewhat of a lazy accent, where you talk through your throat instead of your mouth. If you start talking with you mouth, you sound British. Half-way between throat and mouth, Irish. Throat, American. Deep throat (STFU), southern.
