they are VERRY Hard to kill but there is a weapon called the deathclaw gauntlet and it realy hurts any thing that you swipe with it as for the death claws i found the combat shotgun and VATS verry helpful

if you go from the southwest side of that area you can avoid the death claws and go into the vault
