I get sound in the cut scenes but no npc voices, gunshots vehicle engine sounds in the game. I have reinstalled my drivers to no avail and I have tried using my USB headset and still have the same problem!!!!
FYI my install size is 5.8gb as well.

I think I have fixed it was over at the Pandemic forums yesterday and it seams if you play around with the sound acceleration by using 'dxdiag' it appears to fix it. i've turned my down to standard from full and have been playing saving and reloading all with sound
Explosive: i have to exact same prob except I can still hit Space when the Pandemic grenade movie fails to play and get taken to the main menu

Click Start then Run and type dxdiag into the window that pops up, then click the sound tab. At the bottom of the page you should see a slider called 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' Slide it back and forth to see what setting suits you best. On the Pandemic Forums someone had to turn the acceleration down to the lowest setting but it worked for me at 'Standard'
