Also, make sure you're using the right version of the game. There are two versions -- 1.0 and 1.001. Each has a different trainer. Using the wrong version will cause crashes and lockups.

Are the trainer versions different in content? 🤔

They have the same options, but they're only compatible with the correct version.

I have the vanilla (original) version. I have Vista, I did what you said. There was no warning about another computer interfering, I started both WiC and the trainer as an Adminstrator, and it still didn't work. I'm gonna go through the trouble-shooting guide and see what happens.

Edit: I have no idea how to turn Norton off :P

i don't think norton interferes with the trainer. i have the trainer on vista with norton on, but i don't have any problems

Okay, then I've done everything the guide said. No worky

so it didn't say on the "general" tab that the trainer might be blocked due to it coming from another computer?

OK, so let me get this straight. You right click and Run as Administrator to start the trainer. You start the game. You press F1 at the main menu and you hear "activated". You then start a game. You then press numpad 1 and you hear nothing? Are you sure your numpad keys are even working? Even if the trainer functions didn't work you should at least hear the activated sound. You can try using the customizer to change to different keys. Also, you tried running the trainer AFTER the game instead of before? Does it say READY! at the bottom of the trainer window?
