As a 'diehard' veteran of the series I think it stands alone...all seeing the other movies will do is give you a better look and understanding of the John McLean character, which is great!
For the hell of it I would, the Die Hard series kicked ass! But either way's fine...
Plus Die Hard With a Vengeance is still the best of the series...
