I am trying to get the earth quest done for the skaal and no matter what I do with the staglagmites I can't make the earth quest go to the next step ie "learn the song of the earth" any ideas? do I need a special mace or something? feedback appreciated

OK I did this about a day ago...
When you walk up to the stalagmites, the word 'stalagmite' should appear and when you press spacebar or "USE" a sound should come out. you play the response to the stalagtites.
