It doesn't work in the Arena.

So I think I might be able to explain. I'm also finding a similar issue. The game has a few different types of timed challenges. There are hunting trials. Melee Pits. And then later in the game an Arena where you go up against machines for timed combat. This arena gives special medals used to unlock yellow tier legendary weapons/coils. Its in the region called maw of the arena and only unlocks after the Aether questline.

The freeze timer option seems to work in the Daunt Melee pit, but not in the other two as far as I could tell. And it works in the hunting trials. However it doesn't quite seem to work in the major arena that opens up in the mid game.

I've attached a save file where this arena should be unlocked if it helps? For what its worth, I'm not having any trouble completing challenges in this second arena because the other trainer options make it trivially easy.
