Tried both versions, none of them work for me on Money and EXP.

I have progressed enough to move on to the second map in Michigan (the one with the dam). The second version of the trainer worked for me there. Then I jumped onto another map and it also worked there.
I can't go back and test it on the first map because there's nothing left for me to do there that grants XP so maybe a map change is needed in order to make the trainer work.
I don't know...
