Before I go through the process of requesting a feature using RC points, there's a mod that will remove the room size requirements. Is this possible via the trainer, or should I just use the mod?

Not that I know of. As far as I know room size requirements are calculated according to minimum space for "required room-specific machinery/items" plus sufficient space for additional items to increase room level to three (in rare cases level four, if you plan really well) without using mods or workshop items.
