Do games with this option enabled just skip a lot of frames or something? Have always wondered how you can run the game 4x faster without having 4x the cpu and gpu power (assuming said game is already pushing yours to the ma)

this is doubtful.. the process going on is to return a higher value than normal from the api call to the kernel timer. Basically you are tricking the game into thinking more time has passed, so many games which rely on the kernel clock will interpolate and move you further, etc.

It does not increase the amount of frames nor the amount objects to render which is itself what stresses your hardware mostly. Caliber is right the speedhack only modifiers the time calculation and let the game think more time has passed. For your CPU is doesn't matter if your character walks at 1x speed or 2x speed. It only matters if you have 1 character or 1000 characters and for your graphic card it matters if it has to show you 30 frames per seconds or 120 but not if your character is at position A/B or C.
