I've been part of Steam for 11 years now, not that I wanted to be part of it in the beginning, I was forced by retailers to enter license keys because paying for the items wasn't good enough... I think everyone is forgetting the fact that Steam is just as bad if not sometimes worse than Denovo DRM. Gabe Newell is basically forcing EVERYONE to use his app, Steam has it's ups and downs but mostly I can't enjoy Steam all that much.. I was really excited to hear about GOG & when they did a Galaxy app, it was so different, it was optional not forced in anyway.. Maybe Gabe could learn a thing or two there...

See I perfer reatil "Big Box" Games as LGR calls them in his youtube videos. I want my library of game to take up space in my room. having everything digital has lost some of the glorious excitement I used to feel when opening a game box for the first time, almost having a new car smell. Who among the CH community loathes Steam & digital only services?

I for one prefer digital to physical. if my machine crashes, or, god forbid, my house burns down, i or i get robbed, i dont lose any of my games. i also dont have to worry about accidentally purchasing DLC's multiple times. its all right there. AND, i still get to share my games with family. yes, steam is a wee bit all-inclusive, but developers and publishers arent limited to JUST steam. they can use other retail outlets as well.

just my two cents on the topic.

Digital all the way. The more stuff I have in my room the more I have to pack when I move. 10 years ago I was buying physical versions of the games, I have about 30 boxes which isn't much, but they're always in my way one way or another and I almost end up kicking them around every time. My room is small as it is, I don't want or need another shelf for game boxes I don't need anymore only to collect dust.

    Digital downloads cannot be beat.
The last game I purchased a physical copy for was Assassins Creed Unity
It had 5 (Yes, FIVE) discs.
Upon placing the first, it started installation of Uplay details
In my case it was a simple update
Afterwards it continued as normal through the discs
Nowadays, the game discs sit idly in my bedroom, far from my computer

That experience put me off getting another physical copy of a game just to have the discs become a useless ornament

Could'nt agree more and same thing goes for music albums, I forgot all about the excitement of opening fresh new album smelling the booklet with all the nice artwork and lyrics and browsing it while listening to the album.. These days are long gone I'm afraid.

I can remember my first retail game i bought it had a new fangdangle called 3 1/2" Floppy disk along with the wel known 5 1/4" normal Floppy disks. It was Star Trek: Rebel Universe. It was more of the cardboard with floppy's and booklet inside so it didnt take up much space. The last retail box i can remember getting was Star Trek: 25th Anniversary game.

I enjoyed opening new boxes just to see what was inside them, if it came with posters, t-shirts or colorful art. Maybe a photo filled booklet in there. Course some boxes were really big in comparison to the floppy disk and the manuals it may have come with. Those are like Collectors edition's now since everything has gone almost totally digital and the boxes now are more like an Xbox 360 game box, tiny.

Still would love to get games in thier physical boxes now and then even though they are not available where i live.

Ya I myself loved running to best buy on Tuesday morning to get new games and also I love to read so getting the strategy guide to read was great too always nice to look at your collection of games hell xbox 360 have a ton of boxes well before I got a rgh then didn't have to buy em anymore. But I still love to buy retail vs digital. Like you said I love looking at my collection of boxes !

With the changes in info transfer today, physical copies of games are hard to use as some or most newer machines have no physical drives to speak of. As bandwidth becomes cheaper and unlimited data is becoming the norm, it only makes sense that digital is preferred. I can understand the reason for the post, as you are really at the mercy of the digital provider and if their servers crash or they go out of business, your digital property is forfeit.
