My Cousin (works in IT) likes to say, he uses the AV program "Brain.exe" ....I've never been so confident though. Are you strictly talking about free Antiviruses? Because there is a huge difference between paid and free AVs. I have been using Avast Premier for a year now (it was a special promotion) and I have never had ANY of the problems people talk about, no false positives when using CH trainers etc. nothing.
Only thing I have to do is disable web shield for a second when downloading the Ch trainer. (it only seems to block CH downloads, no other downloads that I initiated). It works really well, but I'm certainly no authority on the subject.

Get yourself PSI to. It will help keep your software up to date and tell you the ones that are Out of date and even those that need to be manually updated. Because there own updating systems are so slow.

I'm starting to see a flood of compatibility issues with trainers and NOD32. Would recommend staying away from that if you like trainers.

Also not many AVs have this, but some can be configured to ask before doing anything on detection which does help quite a bit. Not only does it popup with the option to whitelist the trainer right there, it lets you know on the spot that the AV is trying to block it (instead of staring at "program could not be found" messages and stuff)
