just downloaded the trainer for alan wake ( original /unpatched version of the game ) and it stops working every time I try to use it I am running windows 8 64 bit version, could running windows 8 in some way be the reason why the trainer crashes ?

The trainer for the vanilla version of the game was not designed for Windows 8 and will crash due to an architectural change made with IE (The trainer uses IE's engine to run the authentication check. This mechanism overrides any browser default that has been set making IE a dependency).
You will have to update your game to a version that has a trainer made for Windows 8 or revert your OS back to Windows 7. You can find the supported OS listed with each trainer update posted.
