I was under the impression that you could not trade games that you already had installed (or perhaps this is just in your inventory)...
That is the smartest thing I have ever heard anyone say about anything.

You are right you are unable to trade games you have bought on steam. But from what I hear you can trade/sell gifted games. I never tried it myself so I can not say from experience. So it could just be rumor and conjecture.
