I have been reading some Negative comments about this game so i really can't make up my mind do i want to pay the £39.99 plus DLC item totaling £50. IGN have rated it 6.5 which in my opinion is Awful. Not sure i wish to chance paying all that for a game that has a hack and slash boring fighting and awful skills. I am only going off wht i have been told from the few vids and reviews i have seen. Not seen any good in-Depth review in to the actual gameplay less than 1 week old. Would appreciate some Opinions on gameplay and the whole game. Not going to pay 50pounds for something im going to get bored and hate within 1hour.

I don't like it, Risen 1 had some bad things, and Risen 2 didn't pick up the good.

That said, I enjoyed the setting and whatnot in Risen 1 much more, this whole pirate thing doesn't fit with what the other game had in my opinion.

I'd always take IGN's reviews with a grain of salt. They are kind of known for not caring if conflicts of interest arise - for example, publishers paying some kind of tribute to them for high review scores. Not always the case, but they tend to rate everything from publishers/developers that don't a point or two lower.

As for the game, I'm enjoying it quite a bit myself. The combat can get a little repetitive initially, but once you unlock the power attack and riposte it becomes pretty fun. There's also pretty good variety in what you can pick for your offhand equip, like pistols or dirty tricks like sand to throw in eyes and even coconuts that stun people!

But really though, if you've played the first Risen or any of the Gothic games and liked them, you'll like this one.

I disagree on the pirate theme not fitting. The quests concerning Steelbeard in the first game were pretty important, and you could flat out be a bandit yourself. So I think it'd be kind of silly to have the game focus on the various islands like the first game's without a ship of your own.

As for not liking the game, it's really just a Gothic thing. If you're a fan you take all the quirks in stride, and actually enjoy them. I guess the games are just eccentric like that. Stuff non-fans don't like is the stuff fans appreciate and have gotten used to.

I wouldn't actively say IGN takes money for good reviews, but I would take their - and anyone elses, especially other users' - reviews with a grain of salt. Reviewers, and gamers, can be a little fickle. If someone's a fan of a title and a sequel changes things up in a way they don't like, they can get a little malicious. Not to mention their opinion may differ from your own. They may even just not like the type of game they've been given to review, which is a major flaw in any area of video game journalism. I'd say keep in mind that even official reviews are the reviewers' own personal opinions, and make up your own mind based on what you've seen/read (in terms of articles and news, rather than reviews and commentss).

The game can be a little harsh in the beginning in terms of combat, but it certainly makes a change from games which hold your hand through the first couple of hours of gameplay (or even the entire game).

I'm with shotgun 100% on the Pirate theme fitting very well. It's not like PB just woke up one morning and decided "I'm gonna make Risen 2 with Pirates!"... well, okay, maybe they did, but they've implemented it in a way which fits snugly with the story. It's not just a BAM! Pirates in your face kind of thing, there's an actual reason - and a well written one - for the pirate theme.

Again, I'm with shotgun. If you enjoyed the Gothic series, and/or Gothic-type games, i.e. Risen, then you'll probably enjoy Risen 2. It's a very similar concept and from the little that I've played the same basic formula hasn't changed all that much (which isn't a bad thing).

You'd be tempted to buy it if it was like Gothic 4? Well... each to their own I suppose...

I can't actually say whether or not it's like Arcania, because I wasn't desperate enough for something to do to play it - I still had fingernails I could pull out or limbs I could hack off - but by earlier Gothic games I mean Gothic 1-3, and the previous Risen itself.

You can always expect a certain level of sameness from PB games, but like I said, that's not a bad thing in this case.
