For those who may still be having trouble with the trainer crashing the game ...

You are probably starting the trainer one screen too early.

I was having the same problem starting the trainer at what I at least thought was the "main screen", that being the one before character selection.

Doing that crashes the game every time.

Wait until the character selection screen to start the trainer and it works fine.
