Thanks for staying on top of this, folks. This game is a tough nut to crack.
Related note: In terms of research, the best combination I've found for research won't give single-turn completion for techs, but it does seem to get decent results:
Population: 99999999 (any higher and say hello to crashing). Workforce: 9999 Science: 99
I have no idea why it works this way. The developers must have some really weird algorithms to make their final calculations.
Somewhat related note: The "unlimited scientist" option has yet to work for me.
Somewhat unrelated note: I'd love to see an option to add more points in the custom race design, but I suspect this one is probably the most difficult to hack.

I've been using CoSMOS to tinker with the planet values and I noticed that the max amount of reasearch for any planet is around ~1.7 mln Modifying workforce or science or growing population on planet, and the value circles back to some minimum (for the current pop).
I also found Aptitudes in the Traits tab during race customization. Values are saved the same way as it's hinted in the xml - default farming, industry, trade...etc are each 4 bytes of 50. Good is 75, poor is 25. I wasn't able to find the remaining points counter though
