I originally thought the same and i live Australia and for the reason over here we don't have unlimited cable connection plans and sometimes the downloads can take time finding servers which are faster than some but i've kind of changed my mind about it. In fact the way game companies seem to be slooooowly phasing out retail copies unless its one of those collectors editions with physical collector items (mass effect 3 arm blade thing).
EA's started talks or rumor's that its going with all digital downloads probably to go up against steam but now its a wait to see if its true.
