The trainer that old is made for windows 7 and below.
The things you can try is to run the trainer as admin.
check your AV / Windows defender and make sure nothing is blocking the trainer.

Unfortunately, I have tried all that already with compatibility etc. What I also don't understand is why the trainer "ignores" the offline key and still attempts to authenticiate. Any thoughts on this?

As a sidenote: I wonder if there would be any way to generally remove the authentification requirement from the old trainers? Piracy prob won't really be an issue with them anymore....

Unplug your ethernet cable from the back of the computer, Key only works if there is no internet signal at all.

I tried that, I even unplugged my cable before even turning the computer on and I also have no WLAN. Unfortunately, this particular trainer still doesn't seem to recognise the key and attempts to go online, thus crashing

Just looked at my library and actually have this one, will DL it and try it in a little while.

Just looking at Steam, the ROGame.exe was modified a few times after the last trainer was posted.

Well my game is now just the multiplayer one so can't test it, and I don't see any single player mode for this game anymore it's now listed as Online PvP only.

Yes, I suspected that they updated it again, they were always very "update-happy"
That is the reason why I installed the earlier version from my disc as mentioned earlier, hoping to get the older trainer to work (which it probably would if I could only somehow get past this authentification issue).
