A pokemon will be there doing absolutely nothing apart from saying its name (e.g. "Psyduck". What does Ash do? "What the hell is that pokemon?!"
On top of that, he never banged May, Misty or Dawn and keeps on getting fooled by Team Rocket (-_-)
Edit: Lance, Brock, Giovanni, James or Professor Oak should have been the main characters.

You gotta bear in mind that he's also ten though.
Plus, I figure that he's probably devoid of any actual personality so that kids can imagine that they're ash because "wow, he's just like me!" as they fill in the blanks of his personality with hopeful optimism and imagination.
Kinda like how Link never speaks in Zelda games, so you can imagine that it's you beating up on ganondorf.
