The most current version can be downloaded as a torrent. As mentioned above, there is a torrent file in the MTX install. Get it from the MTX install folder
there is a torrent called mechwarrior4mercenaries.all.to.51.03.01.0017.mtx.torrent that you will need to launch in the Bit Torrent client of your choice (Vuze/Azureus, etc.)
Once the torrent is downloaded, copy the .mtx file to
c:\Program Files (x86)\mektek.net\MTX\temp\Games
Launch MTX, and select Mercenaries, install. It'll churn for 3-5 minutes. Then you have to repeat the process with the ".0017 to .0018 update" (DL the torrent, then replace the MTX file in /games, then let the update install).
At this point you SHOULD have the install the MekTek wants you to have for playing.
OR ... you could just wait till they release a stand-alone executable later this weekend.

BTW, the reason they went thru all this foolishness with the downloader and verifer is that they REALLY love tournament/league multiplayer. The old Mechwarrior leagues had a problem with balkanization due to folks playing with different versions/mods. MekTek thinks they can control this problem by making everyone play thru their verifier/updater.
I've had MTX for a while now and yes it does run slow but the problem I'm having is that the .EXE for mechwarrior Mercs is found by Norton Endpoint as a Trojan so now i cant play it anymore but it's still taking up space on my computer ...... nice huh?
If you're still having problems getting the files to work try this.
Install mtx and run it once.
Download the torrent files to get the necessary mtx files using your client of choice. Torrents available here Link
Copy the *.mtx files into the C:\Program Files\mektek.net\MTX\temp\games directory.
Run mtx and install mechwarrior from the Available Games list.
It should just scan the mtx files to make sure they're complete and install the game. This is exactly what I did to get everything running because mtx failed hard on launch day.
