...a budget one, because I'm poor.

What would work best with my existing 8800GTX?

This is only theoretical.

My concern is that I've reached a point where I've gotten a game (Metro 2033) which requires an 8800 as the minimum requirements (granted, an 8800GTX is uberfaster than a plain 8800). The game runs fine on uberhigh settings--the rest of my setup is tip-top circa December 09.

Also, I don't want to get something slower because it'll being my existing card down--and I don't want to get something faster because it'll be stupid.

Just something on-par with what I have now.

That will work with the 8800GTX in SLI.

I don't want to fall too far behind...and I don't want to buy a full-price replacement.

I believe to use SLI both GPUs must be identical. However, they can be different manufacturers.

Dhampy, just buy another one like yours and use both at the same time.

Good luck finding one for a budget price.

The cheapest Buy It Now is $140, which isn't the kind of budget I was looking for.

Which is a problem, since I have the fastest 8800 they made.

Even theoretically, you'd buy another 8800 GTX, because mixing video cards not only makes no sense due to the fact that they can't be used in tandem on the same project, but they can also cause serious stability issues with your OS.
