He didn't discover gravity. It was already known, and Kepler had already speculated that it was responsible for the motion of the planets.

What Newton did with regards to gravity to tie it to mass: universal gravitation and, by extension, the laws of motion.
In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'

Which still deserves a round of applause. It's not like it's miniscule to the act of discovering gravity. Without him relating it to mass and coming up with equations, we wouldn't have invented space craft, and most of the things we use today wouldn't be.

Meh. Newton didn't exist in a bubble. He existed in the single most productive scientific society--Protestant Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries--the world had would see until the dawn of the information age.

Individuals get far too much credit for scientific developments that were very much a group effort.
In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'
