I'm not arguing that the humans don't royally screw themselves over, but you are not completely born in any certain way. To an extent, you are a product of your environment. You may have certain genetic predispositions to certain behavioral patterns, but the notion that you can't deviate from these genetic influences is a bastardized form of fatalism.
You have a degree of control over your life. With enough influences, this control could simply become an illusion, due to cognitive dissonance and/or Stockholm Syndrome.
You have some say in what you do. Weaker-minded people, maybe not, but most people have some control over their lives.
