TBH, I am really regretting getting the game from steam now. I really don't like to be required to have the steam app running in the background, when it doesn't add anything to the game... Since the MP is done through gamespy.
Maybe it's UAC? If you have UAC on, right click the trainer and select to, "run as administrator". Conversely you could also type MSCONFIG in to your run section in the start menu and choose to disable UAC (which thankfully is not such a pain in Win 7 as opposed to Vista given it allows you to select just what UAC monitors).
