If this doesnt work for you, i've had the flashing issue on some of my "older" games as well, seems to be a incompatible resolution between gameplay and desktop that i had noticed, made those games run "windowed" and no more flashing

windowed!? come on!playing games like that isn't interesting anymore!
nvidia 8600GT amongst the older cards is pretty decent and isn't the reason for ur problem. its definitely got something to do with ur software. i had this card a long time ago and played this game on it...but i didn't come across any problems whatsoever.
