I'm starting chapter 6 and the float feature is wonderfull to get around fast.Always go the direction the LALT key points you to and you won't have a problem.ExAMPLE if it points to a red pipe even at great distance just activate float go towards it with the w key while adjusting + and - to correct height slow your motion with the s key when your at the pipe deactivate and you will automatically grab the pipe.Just one example but as I said follow the route your LALT key points you and all the red items,boards,ropes,pipes ect,and there is no problem!
