The distinction is like the one between dolls and action figures. You can't call them dolls and still have machismo, so you call them action figures.
You can't call them cartoons and still pretend to be mature, so it's anime.
Or when I was young, Japanimation. But that was actual movies, not saturday morning cartoons.
