Well, if you join Duty you can help them destroy Freedom. I imagine (though I haven't done so yet) if you join Freedom, you can destroy Freedom, then your only enemies are bandits and the military (and zombies and wildlife, but they're another story entirely).
I've also heard the ending changes depending on which faction you join, but thats just wild speculation.
I joined Freedom, and I have to say... fighting Duty take forever. And you are pretty much doing it alone.
So, you are given an objective. "Go to point A in Garbage - secure - wait for backup". You go, kill Duty squad and wait, and wait, then wait some more. Finally you see on the map the Freedom squad that is headed to reinforce you. Then they run into mutant. They die. You wait more. Another squad, you run and save them from mutants. Meanwhile Duty respawned. Kill duty, secure the spot.
Get new objective "secure and hold point B"... repeat the above. Notice Duty squad wiping out Freedom at point A. Save them. Same squad B.
"Secure and Hold point C".... you get the picture, right?
Finally arrive at Agroprom. Secured 2 points at the entrance. Receive objective "Destroy Duty base". Guess how many fighters you get for that doosy? Thats right, none.
Btw, Duty never stops re-spawning and sending squads to re-take the objectives. So you have to kill them.
I swear, by the time I reached Duty base gates I killed 100 times more people than actual Chernobyl accident in 86.
Thanks to trader mod and mega trainer I finally cleared Agroprom from all Duty squads. Freedom squad arrived at Duty base and secured it. After that I couldnt bring myself to go to Red Forrest and finish off Duty guys.
Going to try to join Duty. But only after playing thru Limansk and before going to the "hospital"
Ima join Duty as they got best weapons but freedom has most reinforcements, i have to join Duty cince if i get weps, and with trader mod i get alot of money so i can buy upgrades so i can kick freedoms ass.. when can i join duty? i talk to the boss and i ask to join but he say "Sure, u can join but not yet.." sry for my english

Finish all the storyline missions. Receive the 10K reward for flooding the underground passages. If still no offer of membership -do some errands for random duty memebers. That should befriend them
after i flooded the tunnels i chould join duty right away, i didnt eaven need to help duty afterwards with capturing spots exept for the freedom base
