Today I learned that enabling the "Secured Game" option (the one with the Steam logo) when launching a session breaks the trainer. Or rather, it causes the trainer to basically disable the game rather than behave as intended. If you're having this problem, restart your session without the Secured Game option and the trainer should work as normal.
In humanity's defense, we have been left unsupervised.
