Why is it that I cannot drive to my local Babbage's and purchase a PC game on 27 DVD's that I can spend all night installing and then putting the game box with my collection of 200 other game boxes that go from floor to ceiling in my tiny apartment? Why must I download this thing called STEAM that makes me instantly download and install games right to my hard drive while at the same time keeping up with all my other games that I can install and uninstall at the press of a button? I mean, come on. Jeez. What were they thinking? I don't remember them asking me my opinion about this.

Times change, Like vinal, 8 track, and CD. There will always be those who fight for the old way for various reasons. But for the majority most are thrilled with the huge improvement we've made. We have other companies copying us, enough funding to keep it improving for quite a while, and the support other companies don't.

It's a learning curve like every other change in life. You can either cross your arms infront of your chest and thump/grunt like a Neanderthal or you can pick up the new way forward.

But actually, I do miss the days of physical boxes. I still have all mine. I don't know that I'd do the whole 24 CD's thing. Maybe they'd send out thumb drives or something instead, if digital didn't take off. Although I don't see how it wouldn't have. Maybe if it was just a bit slower than it was. Who knows! :P

I absolutely loved buying the physical copy of games I started buying back when Nintendo was new at the store and thank God I was a pack rat. Even now that i play on PC i will still go to best buy and buy the games for xbox and playstation just to have the statue and stuff that came with it. And even buying the strategy guides too. Wow I miss those days

I too miss the days of copies of discs on game. And in eighties when I first started gaming I remember things like using an atari home computer or my first IBM compatible PC with two disc drives and NO Hard drive. You put both discs one in each drive and thats how you played the game no install no saves and at best EGA graphics. What I miss though is having a game on CD or DVD and holding in my hand. I wish I still had some of the CD or DVD games that I bought back then, you know for nostalgia sake.

I loved going to Babbage's as a kid/teen. PC gaming was so different and more varied back then. All of these different genres and weird little experiments with big, colorful artwork and amazing screenshots (usually of the cinematics). Plus, all of the literature and tchotchkes that were included, helping to establish the atmosphere of the game. Of course, there was often some annoying copy protection, but that was easily defeated.

Brick and mortar stores became mundane and physical media cumbersome to me long before the death of each, but I loved coming up in that era where a couple of 5 1/4 or 3 1/2 disks held such magical worlds.

    Devil's advocate:

Where I live, the internet is... unreliable AT BEST. With speeds that top out at a whopping 7 Mbps on GOOD days. That is, on days when I can even get connected. Having a physical copy is much fast and much easier than dealing with a nearly non-existent internet.

I feel for you my friend. How is your cell service and using your phone as a hotspot? Also, have you looked at Satellite based services with speeds up 30MB? That's faster than the fastest DSL they offer in my area which tops out at 25MB.
