I'm skeptical with upgrading to Windows 10, last time I updated from 7 to 8.1 I had to reinstall everything, and I don't wanna do it again just got my new computer and had to do that very thing
I've upgraded via ISO and the built-in upgrade. On restart when the setup should have launched I got a boot error ending up by being forced to make a fresh install. Luckily I've expected something like this happens and so I was prepared.
I recommend a complete backup before upgrading including a rescue disk but again there is no need to upgrade NOW. There are no DX12 games and you still need a DX12 graphic card and the free upgrade is available for 1 year.
I just did because I had to reinstall my OS so or so and I'm thankful about the reset option Windows 8 and Windows 10 have which replaces a fresh install because it not only uninstall all apps but also clean the registry and appdata folder completely so yeah, its nearly as good as a fresh install. So I decided to choose Windows 10 instead of Windows 7 again.
Windows backup never really works for me, got no backup software I really know and trust. the Palit Jetstream GTX 980 is DX12 ready. I installed windows 10 on a VM worked alright a few stuff that bothered me tho what I really hate is the auto update being forced so I made it enterprise adding it to a long term branch thing that slows down the updates considerably

Votemarvel -- good suggestion re reserving (I don't have to install if I don't want to but it gives me the option for a whole while I research things)
Sapphire -- I'm with you on this one for now. My rig is only a year old and runs nicely with 8.1. The new features on Windows 10 sound like fun (ie Cortana) but I don't want to reinstall all my software (my EXPENSIVE but older software -- I'd be hooped if any of it didn't run on the new OS)
Hope they send us out a key for Windows 10 for a fresh install.... cause I don't fancy installing Windows 7 or 8 each time to install 10.
Cause it would be pretty stupid if they didn't after saying that we own Windows 10 permanently.
I dont think that's the case, I think you can only upgrade for free and after one year you wont be able to do so nor you'll have a licence key for a "standalone" copy.
