Is there any way to get these without having the item first?

Edit: I got the items to show up in my inventory, but when I used the item nothing happened

It looks like you dont actually get the summons in your list until after you lose and regain Rydia. I just tried it in the early game right before castle Damycan and while the inventory item gets used up, no summon for Rydia. Which is crummy because your party can potentially find those first three when she is still young in the early game.
