I'm not any IT guy, I only know a little about computers. But here's my question.

My net connection is rated for 15MB/s.
The faster Steam server I've found is the NY server which gives me 1.8MB/s.

Why exactly do steam downloads go so slow?

No idea, but I also never go over 1.6 and my speed is about 11MB/s.

Depends on distance from server, if any hops between you and the server is lagging, also bandwith is limited, there is no infinite bandwith supply.

Yep its all about distance and what is between you and them. At times my speed can hit 20mbs if a majorly lucky. But generally it will stay at about 2.2mbs to 2.4mbs.

If you are lucky enough to have a dedicated line straight to your exchange hub with no tech. I might get perfect upload and download speeds.

As for normal people like I and Dab have said its all about the distance and what is between you and them.

    I almost never get below 3 mb/s.

I'm at 3.4 on what I'm downloading now.
