I expect that the unit options for the trainer work in much the same way as the cheat options the game can be set up to use. They only affect the 'leader' of an army. If you want to level up a unit in an army that isn't the 'leader' you'll have to remove them from that army group and level them indepentanlty. It's slow yes, but that's the way the game is set up. I expect that the trainer functions much like that. I haven't tried it yet. If the trainer doesn't work the way you thought it would, it is likely due to the way the game is designed and NOT a fault of the trainer.
As for materials you can use the built in cheats. They are, so far, the same as the cheats from the first game. The message board for that title does contain a 'cheats' topic that can be used to find out how to make them work. I may come back and add a comprihensive list for this game. If someone wants to beat me to it, then go ahead. I'm lazy, so I probably wont do it any time soon.
I may have missed it but I didn't see any cheats for materials in the Elemental cheats section. UPDATE: I had missed it...Ctrl+M adds 1000 to all resources, according to the list. So, Ctrl+M works to add resources...making the pesky crystal problem a thing of the past...
BTW, very nice work on the trainer...it works as advertised with no dramas at all...very impressed.
