im finding it fairly difficult to see the difference between the trainer and the editor.

Any normal editor i know, is not used while the game is running, this one seems to be. Is it really just another trainer?

The editor lets you edit the values directly but it also has a higher rate of screwing your game up. It gave my troops astronomically high damage values but it also did the same for the AI so it made little difference what my soldiers stats were.

You're better off sticking with the trainer.

I suggest using the editor for resources and cash while at the base, save the game once you have the amount you want, close the game and editor, then restarting to avoid issues.
