I can't get the research option to work for the life of me. Is it not working currently?

Make sure you are reading the NFO instructions carefully. The timing of the trainer options is extremely strict and leaves little room for error.

As per instructions (I wish people would read those)
--- for the first time in a game session, press option 2 while in galactic view where you can see all the solar systems etc.
--- after you hear "activated" go into research screen, click on the tech you want. Mouse over it for the info screen to popup, press option 2 once more and click that same tech again.
It should drop to 1 turn.
