I've admittedly never played VC1. At the time I got a PS3 for my birthday, but had no money myself to buy games. Genius, I know. I might pick it up pre-owned or something if it's cheap enough. I wouldn't pick it up full price though, based on VC2.
And before you say VC1 is better than VC2 and worth every penny, I can only go on my experience with VC2, because that's the only one I've actually played.
I also find it's hard to go backwards in a series... it's like playing the last game in a long series of games and loving it, then going back to play the first one. Sometimes it just doesn't work.
I enjoyed the anime though.

That's not too bad actually. Just gotta wait to get paid, then I'll take a shot at it.
I also remember VC1 winning the Guiness Book of Records' best Strategy RPG... That was a while ago, though.
"On June 17, 2010, Valkyria Chronicles was recognized by Guinness World Records as the best strategy RPG on the PlayStation 3".
According to Wikipedia.

That's a pretty short list to be at the top of.

Aye, that's the one.
For PS3? Well, I suppose it depends whether or not they include Japanese games... Japan has plenty of those.
