Specifically, when a trainer says it's for a "Retail" or "Steam" or whatever version. Some of these games aren't released in 'retail' (which I take to mean boxed), so is that just a generic or default term that shows up when a trainer is posted?

It's a generic term that typically means "no-cd fix" as we have no idea what physical or digital location was used to obtain these "fixed" versions.
