i managed to do both, to the point that Varric at the final scene tried to say merril and isabela at the same time as the people who stayed at the champions side. sounded weird lol

It worked for me however I did Isabella first than Merill. Haven't tried any other combinations but for whatever reason it worked for me. However getting Isabella to get out of the party might of helped it.
yes, i gave her the tome, or rather said i would. then she showed up, and i fought the arishok for her, and she was like, i came back mostly because of you bla bla bla... lovey dubey my wife was content with that part i might add lol.
