So I'm coming into a nice amount of cash for my birthday in 3 weeks and I've decided to upgrade my Ds. Mine is one of the originals, and is about 5 years old now, so I desperately need an upgrade. It's so out of date, it can't even connect to my Router.
So the question I've got for you is should I spend it now and buy a Dsi Xl, or save it for 5 months for the 3Ds? Both are wonderful pieces of machinery, so it's not easy. The Xl has a lot to offer, but an upgrade to that will be out shortly, so it's almost out of date itself. Help a gamer out. What's your opinion?
3DS as with most brand new currently unreleased consoles is likely to be extremely buggy and glitchy and possibly prone to product recall for the first generation or two. Xbox 360 for example, took about 4 generations to actually become stable enough to warrant owning one and another few generations before it had inbuilt wifi and HDMI.
My vote, buy the DSi and wait for the 3DS to get off the ground with glitches and bugfixes that most brand new consoles can be prone to. Best off buying something tried and tested than something you might have to send back or replace due to issues, but that's only if you want to play it on the safe side.

I'm not necessarily planning on getting either, I'm still perfectly happy with my scratched-to-hell-and-back DS Lite of 3 years but the 3DS would be worth waiting for. Didn't like the XL when it came out. It's too clunky. 3DS sounds like cracking fun though.

Well, the 3DS is supposed to be able to play DS and DSi carts as well as 3DS carts just fine.
Also, some of the 3DS launch titles look epic, and other DS titles being released between now and the 3DS are looking good as well, such as Okami DS and Metal Gear Solid 3DS (Basically Snake Eater with 3D effects and PS2 quality graphics and such).
The 3DS is apparently able to have far superior graphics to the DS (the jump from just under N64 quality to just equal to PS2/Gamecube quality).
Also, Nintendo is VERY good about honoring warranty dates. Should any of the launch systems have any bugs that can damage the system without user negligence, they'll replace, repair, or upgrade it for free same as Microsoft did for 1st through 4th gen X-Box 360 consoles.
