Story ================================ An Alternate World History Tao Feng, Fist of the Pale Lotus takes place in a world not unlike our own, but once in which the United States does not extend to the Pacific coast of North America. Instead, the sovereign nation of New China occupies the region of what we know in our world as California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and part of Idaho. There is trade between the two nations as well as shared transportation and coastal ports. New China also shows signs of American influence. English is an accepted second language, and New China has declared its independence from the People's Republic of China. The Capital of New China is Dai Fou (our San Francisco) at the Harbor of Dragon's Breath. However, most people refer to Dai Fou as Metro-China. The History of the Pale Lotus and Black Mantis Sects Conflicts between two sects, the Pale Lotus and the Black Mantis, date back hundreds of years in ancient China. The Pale Lotus are dedicated to achieving harmony, defending the helpless, promoting justice and seeking the inner path to immortality, known as neidan, or inner alchemy. They seek transcendence by perfecting the chi - the inner spirit and life energy. Their leader is known as the Master Sage, one who instructs the brethren in the fighting arts and preserves the knowledge and sacred treasures of the Perfect Harmony Temple. The Pale Lotus sect has always been opposed by the treacherous and evil Black Mantis sect. The Black Mantis seek immortality through waidan, or outside alchemy, searching for magic elixirs or other ways to escape death. The Black Mantis have always been led by one who is known as Wulong Goth. The title, powers and even ancestral memories of each Wulong Goth are passed to the next in line upon death. One vicious warlord after another has held this title, and each of them has hated the Pale Lotus and what they represent. Even as dynasties rose and fell, each new Master Sage was contested by a new Wulong Goth, with neither achieving absolute victory. In the 1800's, as foreigners meddled in the affairs of China, all-out chaos ensued. The Black Mantis took advantage of this upheaval to increase their power base while the Pale Lotus retreated to their sanctuary - the Perfect Harmony Temple - high in the mountains. Somehow, the Black Mantis discovered the temple's location and plotted to destroy all the Pale Lotus members. They nearly did, except that one follower - Shihao - was on a quest at the time. He returned to find everyone ruthlessly murdered except for his Master Sage who was with his dying breaths revealed where he had hidden his infant son - Lo Shu - and the twelve sacred objects of the temple. With nowhere else to go, Shihao took the boy and the sacred treasures and made his way to New China. Once in New China, Shihao raised Lo Shu and taught him in secret everything that he could about the way of the Pale Lotus. Lo Shu grew into a strong, wise young man, seemingly safe and ocean away from their enemies. As Lo Shu married and began raising his own children, Shihao decided that he must renew the fight against the Black Mantis on his own. After he left there was never another sign of him until one day a member of the Eastern Sun sect collapsed at the threshold of Lo Shu's private retreat, the Neidan Sanctuary. He gave Lo Shu a tablet - the Yang Tablet - that Shihao had entrusted him with. It was one of two tablets that each contained six riddles revealing the hiding places of the twelve treasures from the Pale Lotus temple. The other tablet - The Yin Tablet - had been taken by the gangsters who had attacked him. Decades later, Lo Shu learned that the other tablet was in the hands of the Black Mantis. Eventually, Lo Shu began to see signs that the Black Mantis had made their way to New China. Despite a peaceful family life, he pondered what it meant to be the last Master Sage of a lost sect. Evaluating all the risks he decided he must begin building the forces of the Pale Lotus again, so this is what he did. He began to train his granddaughter Aria and an orphaned boy named Jiao at his Neidan Sanctuary. In secret, he began to battle on his own against the Black Mantis by taking out members of their crime ring in Metro-China. Wulong Goth began to be suspicious of who this sorcerer was that kept destroying his operations in New China. He suspected what the truth might be, yet couldn't bring himself to believe a Master Sage still existed. Meanwhile, Lo Shu continued to grow his Pale Lotus sect. He discovered Aria had done some recruiting of her own by teaching a high school friend named Isis the techniques of the sect. And one night, a burglar scaled the wall of the sanctuary and ran smack into Lo Shu, who quickly overpowered him, Lo Shu was shocked to see the Black Mantis amulet around the neck of a boy, whose name was Damon. He vowed to train the boy and steer him away from the path of evil. He rounded out his group of recruits with a police detective named Shen Zhen whom he'd worked with on numerous occasions. Aria, Isis, and Jiao were rechristened as Jade Dragon, Fierce Tiger, and Fiery Phoenix, while Damon took his place as Iron Monk. Shen Zhen, now known as Divine Fist, stood apart from the others. He was dedicated to the Eastern Sun sect, but though not a member of the Pale Lotus, he joined their cause. The four young warriors gave their allegiance to Master Sage and except for Divine Fist, proclaimed themselves Pale Lotus from that day forward. Under Lo Shu's guidance, they agreed to fight evil, exterminate the Black Mantis, and restore the harmony of the tao to Metro-China or wherever their quest took them. The Pale Lotus lives again! The Legend of the Immortal of the South Pole A myth of great antiquity exists amongst the Pale Lotus, Black Mantis and Eastern Sun sects. According to this myth, there was an immortal celestial known as Shou-Hsing, or Nan-chi Lao-jen ("Old Man of the South Pole"). He was known for setting the date of a person's death, and for possessing the peach of immortality. It is believed that if one could win through and reach Shou-Hsing at the South Pole, and present him with sufficient treasures to win his favor, the Gold of Longevity would grant the gift of immortality. To win through to Shou-Hsing, however, means defeating his guardian warrior, Zhao Yen, who is immortal. Wulong Goth is particularly determined to achieve this goal. Any of his inner core of Black Mantis members would just as happily win it for themselves. They secretly fear death and crave life forever. Master Sage or his Pale Lotus members would also like to achieve this immortality, if only so they may continue their battle for justice and prevent a Black Mantis from becoming an eternal threat. ================================ 5.
