The Menus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Main Menu --------- Exhibition - Play a single game with any two teams and under your own rules. Season - Play a 82-game schedule with a team. You could stimulate games here, too. Playoffs - Duke it out in a playoff bracket! Game Settings - Adjust Difficulty, Rules, Team Configurations, Sound, and the Background Sound VMU Backup - Load and Save files here. Credits - WOW! LOOK AT THOSE NAMES! GEE, I WONDER WHO THEY ARE. Exhibition ---------- Before playing a game here, you may choose your teams and jerseys. You can even adjust the lines to your liking. Trading players across teams are also possible here. Season ------ Over the season, you may view your team and other teams' stats and standings via 'Season Standings' and 'Season Stats'. Otherwise, nothing special. You need 170 blocks to save a season, though. Playoff ------- The game will stimulate the 1999-2000 season for you and let you play as any of the surviving teams. Play 7-game serieses for the Stanley Cup! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ c. Creating a Player ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the Exhibition, Season and Playoff menus, there is an option entitled 'Custom Player'. Here you may create up to 40 individuals, 4 goalies and 36 players. Sadly, the system is flawed and you can just push the stats up to the max without any restrictions. You can name the player as always, and its appearance (how fat and tall and whether if he's a righty or a lefty). Jersey numbers are also changeable. To import a created player, go to the 'Trade Players' sub-menu and select the desired team that you want your player to be on and select 'Free Agents' for the other side. Select the created player and trade away! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ d. Offensive Strategy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Turbo Darting ------------- I call this 'Darting' because you literally dart past the defense line while pressing turbo. To do this, just press down B (turbo) and skate in circles around the defense. However, the longer you have the puck, the more likely you will get checked. It's more like dirty and dishonest hockey. Breakout Passing ---------------- Now I LIKE this! If you're not familiar with Breakout passing, I am here to explain it you. If you ever recovers the puck deep in your zone, you can pass to either wingman (left or right) along the boards. Then the wingman will direct the puck to the center. By the time center gets the puck, he's at or past the red line with 1 or 2 guys in front of him. It's a very effective way of creating opportunities because the other wingman would skate along the center. Sounds like an scoring chance? Yes! _______________________________ / .D \ | / ___ | | / | | | D --- Defenseman | / | RW -- Right Wing | / | C --- Center | / | . --- Puck | RW. | / --- Path of Passing | \ | |~~~~~\~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| | \ | | \ | | \.C | Scoring ------- There are several ways to do this, but all of them won't work half of the time because the goaltending in this game is very stingy. ONE-TIMERS - Common sense. You saw this back in the heyday of Genny and SNES with NHLPA games. With at least two men going to goal, one on each side, pass the puck to the other men and tap X before he receives the puck to execute a slap shot. However, it is not a sure goal or even close at that. The shooter has to be on the near opposing side, and he has to release it very quickly because goalies here aren't flamboyant and won't get fooled easily. There is an interesting method which include slap-shot one- timers: Have two point men (at the blue line), one with a puck. One would pass to the other point man... The point man should aim to the _other_ side of the goal, because the goalie usually go too far to YOUR side. Here's a diagram: _______________________________ / \ | ___ | | | .| | D --- Defenseman | G . | | . | | . | . --- Path of Shooting | . | - --- Path of Passing | D - - - - - - - D | |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| | | | | | | BREAKAWAYS - Probably the easiest chance to score in a real game of hockey, but it's just as hard as going 1 on 5 in NHL2K. The goalies here covers maybe 85 or 90 percent of the goal just by standing there. So, if you find yourself in a breakaway position, you could prefer to use the boards to turn around and give the puck to an incoming for a one-timer, a much better chance to score. If you prefer going head-on-head with the goalie... then you should just try to do a SIMPLE deke (left to right or vice versa) and shoot it up in a top corner. Very difficult, tho. SLAP-SHOTS - A better chance of scoring than breakaways and I'll tell you why: they create rebounds and rebounds create the best opportunities for putting one in. You could just skate into the zone and blast one at the goalie. The puck might fall awry, and one of the bystanders of yours might pick it up and score. Doesn't happen often, tho. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ e. Defensive Strategy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CHECKING - Your BEST weapon in your defensive array, by far. With enough speed, you can knock the player off the puck and voila! The puck's yours without any contest! It is better to check them head-on, as it creates more momentum distruption. Checking from behind just isn't as effective. Hold down the turbo button and you're set for a check! POKE CHECKING - With your stick, you can poke the puck out of the hands of the enemy. This is best used when you're controlling a defenseman going backwards, facing an attacker with the puck. Make sure you're close enough and poke away! I would say it works about half of the time. BLOCKING SHOTS - With the Block button, you can drop down to the knees or body to block a shot. However, if the guy doesn't shoot, you will have a while before you can go back up. IMO, it doesn't work as good as just standing between the shooter and the goalie. That way you can either check, poke check, or hope the puck hits you. :) Fighting -------- Heh. If you do fight, you will get a 5-minute penalty along with the other guy. However, if you press A THREE times before you fight, you will not receive a penalty. Instead, the opponent boxer will receive 2 minutes minor. Haha. Anyway, if you do fight... Just use A (Duck) and X (Jab) to work his health bar down. Ducking will help you save some health loss, while jab is very quick, much better than a sloppy hard punch (Y) which takes a lot of time to execute. You could grab the other guy with B but I don't use it personally because... I like jabbing! ;) Up to you really. Experiment with the controls. ============================================================================== ___ \ | / ___ \ | / ) | ' / 2.0 ) | ' / __/ . \ TEAMS __/ . \ _____|_|\_\ _____|_|\_\ ============================================================================== =---------------------= MIGHTY DUCKS OF ANAHEIM =---------------------= Overall: 79 (T-11th) Offense: 79 Defense: 79 Goaltending: 84 Speed: 92 Passing: 80 Checking: 78 Best Players: RW - T.
